Vape pens, or e-cigarettes, are often billed as a safer way for smokers to get their fix. The user breathes in water vapor infused with nicotine and/or other chemicals and exhales what looks like smoke. Some young adults who have been smoking for years are now turning to e-cigarettes to try to kick the habit. Many of them believe that e-cigarettes are healthier than cigarettes. But in one recently published study out of the University of California, San Francisco found that people who tried e-cigarettes were no more likely to quit than smokers who hadn’t. Youth Radio explores what’s attracting young smokers to “vaping” and if it’s really helping them quit.
