Now, at almost 18, I can’t even express how important my brother’s love, support, and friendship has been to my growth as a person.

But looking back at it now it made me a stronger person and shaped my character/personality.
My dad once told me “you ain’t nothing but an East Oakland girl… so don’t call me when you strung out on drugs.” He said more but those are the words that stuck wit me and they always will.
In August, 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, MO. The story made national news.
I interviewed people on the streets of Oakland about the subject of cops in society and the role of racial bias, and then I interviewed a police officer.
On August 19, 2014 in MATCH we took a field trip to Google. The bus picked us up from Youth Radio and drove us all through different places. I still remember seeing a farm and other things that I don’t usually see in Oakland.
Once I reached my destination of Estelí, Nicaragua the feelings of anxiousness went away and the journey that shaped me into the person I am now started. During this time that I call the” unexpected summer of realization”.
Cutting and being late to class is starting to become a trend and is considered “cool”. These habits set a student up for failure and don’t lead to a successful completion of high school
Another great thing about hip hop is that it allows people who may not normally have an ability to express themselves and be heard to let it all out. Kids who live in underprivileged areas or have abusive parents may not have many people to talk to, but with hip-hop they can channel all of their emotions in a positive way.
