Asian-American Youth Have a Lot of Feelings About ‘Crazy Rich Asians’
Representation matters.
Representation matters.
The first time someone directed a racial slur towards me… it took me a few moments to process what I had just heard. I was taken aback, but not exactly surprised. After all, there I was, a Filipina reporter covering a Pro-Trump rally.
“In middle school, I came up with this brilliant plan to defy all Asian stereotypes. I was loud. I hid my high test scores… And I stopped speaking Chinese.”
It shouldn’t be a newsflash that not all Asian-Americans do well in school, but the model minority stereotype makes the actual problems in these communities invisible.
When I think about my brother and sister not knowing the language, I get annoyed, but I’m also annoyed at myself for not learning it all fast enough.
