Application deadlines are coming up for graduating seniors interested in going to college next year. It’s a stressful time. Youth Radio talked to three graduating seniors, Arnav Gupta, Nina Roehl, and Sierra Fang-Horvath, about their mad sprint to the finish line.
At home, I isolate myself. When I have my anxiety attacks, usually I lay on my back or my side and I start to hyperventilate. Inside [there are] a lot of things just going through my mind, just a lot of bad things. That’s all I think about. And the more I think about it, the worse it gets. So then I usually just cry it out.
I thought it would be a shortcut to happiness — until I experienced the side effects.

This week, clinicians, researchers, insurers and patients have a new handbook for diagnosing mental disorders. The DSM-5 (the fifth version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) contains changes that will affect young people specifically, including new guidelines on how to measure and document suicidal behavior in adolescents.
