Soon, I will be making the great college migration, leaving the Bay Area, my home of 18 years for the east coast. This summer, my friends and I made a list of all the quintessentially Bay Area things that we had to do before college.
The first thing that came to mind was food. We’ve been eating staples like La Taqueria, Bakesale Betty’s, and Colonial Donuts. In between meals we’ve hiked Mission Peak, Twin Peaks, and Grizzly Peak. There have been a lot of peaks involved. But what we have been trying to capture are the best and last glimpses of our home.
Like those of you who have lived in one place their entire life, I long for the freedom college will provide. Still I find myself buying an extra Oaklandish shirt because my college excitement has yet to belay the sadness of leaving home.
This summer is my Swan Song, my goodbye love letter to the Bay. Because in a few months when I’m far away and braving my first snow storm, I want to be able to wrap myself in the warmth of nostalgia and memories of home.
