Marvin Gaye’s album, What’s Going On, has been called one of the great soul music records of all time. It was a concept album, written from the perspective of a Vietnam Vet returning home to a different America: one where urban poverty, the hippie movement, and raised fists boiled together with the anti-war movement.
The album was showcased at a 1972 concert at the Kennedy Center in Gaye’s hometown of Washington DC. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of that live performance The Kennedy Center gave Youth Radio producer Brandon McFarland access to Marvin Gaye’s original recording session of “What’s Going On” to produce a remix with other young musicians.
